A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters.

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.

They’re polar opposites.

In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She’ll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he’ll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.

  • Pirates!

Great novel! Let’s you inside the mind of a writer yet being realistic with rom com and reality. Has the ups and downs of life and shows the messy bits that makes the outcome so much more sweeter. Great story you wont be disappointed in the new adventure of Gus and January in their discussion of a 3rd pirates of the Caribbean movie
  • Decent read - not lighthearted

I’ll start by saying I’m a big fan of Emily Henry. The first book I read was People we meet on vacation (10/10) , followed by Book Lovers (10/10), and then this as my third piece (5-6/10) I was under the impression this would be more cute and light hearted, a feel-good romance. I came to find quickly that this heavily involved themes such as grief, loss, abuse, secrets, affairs… with a side of suicide cult thrown in. I found January to be extremely emotional and insecure.l and was always complaining about how broke she is. Gus was an interesting character and I enjoyed reading about their romance develop. I do agree with another reviewer that the ending 10-15% of the book felt very abrupt and rushed. It was like everything happened all at once and all these strings were forced to get tied up in a way that is unbelievable to be coincidental with the timing. I think it could’ve been paced better in that aspect. In short - it kept me interested out of more curiosity than enjoyment, I wouldn’t recommend it or write home about this one. Def check out her other books though!
  • Very cute! Loved both protagonists

This was a very cute read. Typically I lean towards liking one protagonist over the other, but that was not the case. Both January and Gus were so likable in their own ways and their romance was so sweet.
  • The Sweatiest Story

    By K.Q.K
My new favorite author. I’ve always loved romance, because who doesn’t love falling in love. There’s something about Emily’s stories though. When I’m not reading one I’m thinking about how long until I get to again.
